The Modbus protocol has two distinct modes: ASCII Modbus, which uses ASCII-encoded hexadecimal messages and binary Modbus, which uses raw binary messages, see SYS 600 Modbus Slave Protocol for more information. The Modbus protocol functions as a true serial line or Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) network. It supports one single master station and up to 247 RTUs on a multi-drop line. It provides a transport mechanism for the master s requests and RTU response messages. General principles of the Modbus protocol The Modbus Communications Protocol is an asynchronous, byte packaged protocol used for communications between the master stations and Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) or Remote Terminal Units (RTUs). This means, in our case, connecting Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to SYS 600. Modbus master protocol The Modbus master protocol is mainly used for a master-slave connection between intelligent devices. General knowledge about the Modbus protocol and PLC programming is also needed. In order to fully understand the concepts outlined here, the reader should be familiar with the SCIL programming language and general SYS 600 application techniques.
